will filing bankruptcy prevent you from being sued in a civil suit?

I have not been served papers yet, but was just informed that I am being sued in a civil case. Will filing bankruptcy prevent this from happening?

Any bankruptcy filing invokes an automatic stay, meaning that civil lawsuits are prevented from proceeding.

If the civil lawsuit has not yet been filed, it cannot be filed while you are in bankruptcy.

If it has been filed already, the bankruptcy filing will put a halt to it.

If the court has received the filing, the lawsuit goes forth. Your financial status is irrelevant to the suit at this point.
