How to get money for college when family in bankruptcy?

My parents have filed bankruptcy and it wont be up for 2 more years. I start college this fall, but we don’t qualify for state or federal grants because "we make too much money". What the FASFA people don’t realize is the payment they make monthly to the bankruptcy court. My parents are so poor they have to borrow money from me that I make at my part time job, just to buy groceries. I wont be able to work much when school starts and I was wondering if anyone knew of some scholarships (no matter how little, every bit helps) or grants so that paying for books and related expenses wouldn’t be such a hassle. Tuition is free until i leave my community college (I have %75 bright futures). I just need help paying for books, supplies, and possibly gas. Can anyone help?
No loans whatsoever. I need grants or scholarships.

How can student fill out FAFSA if parent can't put income due to bankruptcy?

‘ve filed for bankruptcy and now it’s time for my daugter to fill out her FAFSA form for college. My bankruptcy attorney told me to not fill out the FAFSA form. The only way my daughter can apply for scholarships is if she fills out the FAFSA form and the form asks for parents income. What do I do?

Should I file Chapter 7 bankruptcy myself or hire a lawyer?

I have been sick over a year. I have been battling it out with social security and have not received any income since my illness. I do not own any property, not even a car. It got repossessed during my illness. I had to break my lease and stop paying my credit cards. My total debt is around 80K. My credit is devastated. I found out my former landlord intends on getting a judgement. I have no money, but am allowed to live for free right now because of my parents. I’m 26. I went to law school for 2 years before I got sick. I bought a NOLO book on bankruptcy, but it seems like the process is stressful and confusing. I don’t have the money to hire an attorney. Nobody else has tried to sue me yet. My family said they would pay up to 2K for a bankruptcy lawyer as like a birthday/christmas present, but I feel bad because they have already been paying for so much (my medical bills, me living in their house). Should I file this myself, wait, or get the attorney? There is no way I can pay all these people back at this point.
Oh I have a free consultation on Monday.

How can I go to college when my parents filed bankruptcy?

My parents filed bankruptcy this year and now they do not qualify to co-sign with me for loans or are eligible for things like the parent loan that colleges offer. When I look at what colleges offer me for financial award on my award letter loans that require my parents are included in it anyway. The problem is when they do that and my parents can’t help me even if they wanted to and there is no extra money or options that the colleges can offer me in that award letter as a back-up plan. How can a college expect a person to go to college if their parents have no money and therefore filed bankruptcy? I want to go so bad but i do not know what to do. Any help at all is appreciated.

Am I ready to move out soon? Need avice.?

I have asked a similar question about this and I just want to see more opinions on the subject.

I am going to be turning 20 in 2 more months, I have a stable job with a stable pay, I don’t own a car just yet, I currently live with my parents and I should finish college within about a year. (I’ll be majoring in Polysomnography).

I started saving money a long while back, maybe a year. My boyfriend (of 3 years) lives out in California while I live in Illinois and he is still going to college and will be for a while to earn his Master’s degree. I would really love to move out towards his end and rent an appartment. In saying that, he would live with me while still going to college and I go to my work somewhat close by.

Now here are my questions and I have quite a few:

1) How much on a months rent (as an estimate) and bills, etc. does it cost for a small appartment?

2) How much money should I have (another good estimate) to have before moving anywhere?

3) Should I buy a car before moving anywhere? [or] Is it not a good idea to buy a car and rent an appartment all at once? (ANY advice on purchasing a car I’ll take).

4) I’ve heard from some people that you can open another bank account and keep it as your "emergency" account, just in case if you run out of cash in your original account. How does that all of work and how can I create one?

5) How long is the process of moving out to rent a place take?

6) Any tips or advice on how to rent an appartment, car transportation, money management, etc., that I should really know about when stepping out into the living world?

**Also note: I DON’T want anyone saying that I’m doing this for my boyfriend or that I’m rushing into things. Either way, I’m doing this to be with him, practice living on my own and try out certain job areas that will give me work experience. So it’s basically for my own good and learning experience.

**I don’t want to mention how much I make a month on my job or how much I have currently considering that’s all my own privacy. But I will take examples of how much I SHOULD be making a month and how much I SHOULD have total to be stable enough to move out.

~ So many pleases and thank yous to you all. If I could I would answer you all as the "best answer" if I could if I’m really impressed with all your advice. So I repeat, I’ll take ANY kind of advice and/or story examples on how to live on my own without going into debt or getting bankrupt. (That is my biggest concern) I would want to move out within a year or two and hopefully I can if I play my cards right and just save save save SAVE my money. Thanks again and please help! ~

foreclose or file bankruptcy?

We are currently trying to sell our home, one we can no longer afford. Since we bought our home me and my wives income has fallen roughly ,000, in February it took another hit when I was laid off. We have the house listed as a short sell and still no takers ( and I believe that it is listed almost ,000 under what we owe). Me and my wife have agreed to go back to school and live with our parents until we finish, so immediate credit credit is not an issue. Would a bankruptcy or a foreclosure be the wisest? (Mind you that our credit will really not be needed for at least 4 years.)

Bankruptcy Chapter 7 for Medical Debt?

Hi, I’m in a bad situation. I’m uninsured, and I had a severe retinal detachment a week ago. I had to go to emergency room, and then treatment. The hospital is going to bill me with huge amound, probably around 30k they said. And doctors are not even sure if I’ll get my vision back, as I still can’t see after the treatment. I applied for country programs, but they are not covering them because I went into emergency room care before applying for those programs. I do not have a job, and my poor wife works to support me and makes only about 600 dollars a month after tax. I don’t know what to do. I’m a student who has no job, and my wife and I live in my parents house. Therefore, I’m interested in filing bankruptcy. I have no way of paying this amount, and I certainly do not want my poor wife’s paycheck going to the debt. What happens when I file for bankruptcy? Will it affect my wife’s credit? I had perfect credit with excellent history until this happened. If I file for bankruptcy, will I lose all my current in-good-standing credit card with my bank? I don’t owe anything nor do I have any outstanding debt except this medical bill. Is it possible to file for bankruptcy but keep my wife’s credit score out of it? What are the requirements to quality for chapter 7? I heard that medical debt is unsecured, so it can be discharged. I have no job, unable to find job in this economy, I was going to cheap community college when this whole thing happened. What should I do? I need help. Will they put me in jail for not paying this debt?? thank you, kind people. I’m totally screwed.
For those of you who are asking how I’m asking these questions if I’m currently blind: I’m having my friend type it for me and read the answers to me.

Is it common for people who struggled to become financially successful to forget where they came from?

Essentially my parents had always been low-middle to middle income people. They have lived paycheck to paycheck most of their lives. They struggled to pay the bills and shopped cheap and with coupons. They very rarely bought anything nice for themselves and essentially made a lot of mistakes in their lives part of filing bankruptcy. They recently within the last 7 years have done very well for themselves to a point where they make around 187K a year and have kind of like a disposable income. They afterwards changed their habits of spending. Spending haphazardly and not being careful with the money. They also stop shopping at like Wall-mart and shop at upper level stores. They don’t use coupons anymore and are not careful with their income. My wife and I are just starting out and are doing pretty well. However they frown when we go to wall-mart or get stuff online instead of the store. DON’T THEY REMEMBER WHERE THEY CAME FROM. Is this normal when people go from poor to rich?

Christians:This is a long story but what else can this story teach others?

My life wasn’t so peachy when I was young. My family went from the Leave it Beavers to Tragedy real quick. But to start with In my early childhood; I had a great family life.

Because of an accident, my father lost control his mind we went bankrupt during his many visits in and out of the state hospital.
He had constant hallucinations and an altered state of reality. He did many things "unaware" that shamed himself, and all his family. The doctors tried very hard to help regain control of reality but ultimately he ended up as a permanent mental disability case.

As a kid in school some of the embarrassing things my father did made me a constant target of bully’s. I took no pride in fighting but had to almost everyday just to make the 2 mile walk I made home everyday after school. Just punk kids and their lack of knowledge, trying to make a name for themself. It seemed like the more I beat up defending my self, the more I had to fight. To this day, I never have lost a fight. But I never started any either. So anyways..

My mother lost hope in my dad and was not the better woman. She left him because she said it was just too much to deal with. The varies step-dads that were in and out of her life gave me EVERY reason to HATE someone.

This HATE could have consumed me but my Lord had given me his strength. Strength above the Hate. Strength in Love

Eventually my mom found a man with some stability and money, but by then I was burned out by the previous bad choices.
So, after reaching an age where I could choose to take care of my father….15….I left my mom and
became my fathers father.

He only collected 16k a year from social security so we were very poor. We lived in a very small trailer and I remember how difficult it was to be around kids with "Normal" lives. Some of the parents mis-judged me. And even many of my friends underestimated personality and God given abilities.

These, not being known at that time, by terminology were "Gifts of the Spirit" But none the less God was teaching me even while I was unaware. His presence was always with me.

It might seems that all these troubles could have pulled me away from our LOVING HOLY FATHER, but instead it brought me closer to him. In my trails, he taught me about Love..patience…and service…..and respect. These trails affirmed for me that when you need God the MOST… You don’t have to look very hard, because if you believe what He did for you on the Cross….then he is always inside you. You do not have to rely on your own strength. His is within you. Since my childhood, my living testimony has be used to bring several people to the Lord. Can you think on anything else this story can teach others.

Really quick – if I file bankruptcy, can my parents lose their house?

I owe about 50K in debt, but 27K is student loans, 3K to my parents and less than 2K is taxes. meaning I would be file on about 18K. But I moved back at home. So when I get asked what my address is, I have to give the address of my parents house – which they own. I live in New York state and I work a part-time job making .50 an hour. And trust me, I have been looking for something better.

Are my parents at any risk of losing their home if I file bankruptcy???

What should I do about my debt?

I made some very stupid decisions when I was 19. I’m 23 now. In 2004, I got into alot of credit card debt. I racked up about ,000. I then panicked and never made a single payment. I was a very stupid and naive person at the time. In any case. I have been hiding from creditors for four years now. I want to fix my debt, or at least do something about it so I don’t have to be afraid anymore. I know I should probably consolidate and make payments, or file bankruptcy. I’m now a Dean’s List student, I live at home with my parents, and I am between jobs, but I would be looking to make payments. I could never afford all of it to be paid back. Is it reasonable to think I can go to a lawyer, contact my creditors and make a settlement for 25% of what I owe? That would be ,500 and I could pay that off with 0/mo for about 5 years. I want to have great credit someday.

Please help.

Thank you

More wiser and more scared
I just pulled a credit report from 2006. The total is actually 36,000. Thank you for your answers. I will consult a lawyer and see what I should do. I could just ‘wait’ I suppose, but I’m a legal US citizen from a poor hispanic nation. I want to do the right thing and fix my problem and own up. I can’t pay all of this back, but I want to try.
Speedbum…

I never said that I was proud of this, I am not. And yes, I agree. Creditors should have NEVER given a stupid, immature, dumb 19 year old like myself this much money to toy with. I think each person should have a debt consultant when they start to establish debt.

And to further add, we also have a war going on, so it’s not helping our economy. I didn’t cause of national deficit, thanks for asking. I do however, pay my taxes.

Should I help my parents with the down payment on their new home?

I am in my last year of law school, still searching for a post-graduation job. When my parents filed for bankruptcy, they were allowed to stop paying on their home morgage (around 00 a month) under the Bankruptcy Code. This "automatic stay" has been in place since my dad filed, a total of 6 months. Hence, for 6 months my parents have been living in their house that is about to be foreclosed by the bankruptcy courts without paying a morgage. You think they would have saved money for moving right? NOPE. They don’t have a dime!
I am a LOT wiser with my money. I have a 00 mutual fund account, over 00 in savings, 2 jobs in which I place "extra" money in money market account.
They have paid my car note and insurance ever since I have been in law school. I feel that I should help them with their down payment on their new house but I am scared because they are not financially responsible and I need that money to pay for bar dues, bar classes, the bar itself, moving expenses, etc.

If i file bankruptcy will it show on my wife's credit?

Thanks to idenity theift i pulled my credit, i found alot more than i expected but as it turns out they do all pan out. I am thinking about filing chapter 7 bankruptcy but since my wife’s credit is good we dont want it to show on her file, heres the thing. We are young we have nothing in our name our house is owned by her parents our cars are paid off we have no loans or anything of that nature with both of our names on it I would be filing by myself with out her. All my bad credit is old starting when i was 18 and I want to get a fresh start and with all the old medical bills and things bankruptcy seems the best for our family. I’ve read alot on these sites saying your credit is there credit and when you are married there debt becomes yours, this isnt true my wife’s credit score is over 700 while mine is in the 500’s this is why i am asking i dont want it showing up on her file…. does anyone get what im trying to say???

Signed a lease but did not move in because we are filing bankruptcy, what will happen?

We signed a 1 yr lease to rent a house we have not even paid the deposit or any thing, and we decided not to move in. We filed bankruptcy and the landlord now wants some money out of us, but we have none. I have found online where it says that you can choose to end a lease or assume it. So choosing to end it, do I owe her money? I gave her 2 week notice that we were not going to move in like we agreed. If she sues me, for the amount of the rent for one year can it be dismissed in the bankruptcy? We decided to stay w/ parents to save our money to pay for the bankruptcy it seems we are too broke to go broke!

Before I File Bankruptcy, is there anything I can do?

I have like a 10,000 dollar accident debt from getting in an accident without insurance. I was under 18 at the time and my parents filed bankruptcy but it came back to me when I turned 18. I plan to file bankruptcy because with the amount and the interest on that amount it would take me way to long to pay that off…but I was wondering if I should load up some credit cards or something before I file, just to get something out of it. My credit bad already apparently so it doesnt look like I can get any credit cards or even loans. Any advice?
Im only 18 and I feel like these are my prime years, I dont want to work full time for free basically to pay off some stupid debts. I would rather pay the 1,000 dollar bankruptcy and deal with bad credit for awhile. I guess Im more so asking if theres anything I can do before that to get something out of it.
I dont know how it came back to me, but my mom sent the a letter to the judge showing where in there bankruptcy thing it showed it got rid of that debt but they still said I was responsible.

Why do banks require a co signer on a deferred student loan when you may remove them after 18-24 mo?

I am not eligible to receive a student loan by myself because of my young credit of only about a year even tho I have an excellent score.
I am not able to have my parents cosign for me because they are coming out of bankruptcy a little over a year out and have re established their score. but the loan companies and banks say it needs to be 2 years. I recently transfered to a very expensive school. I did receive a scholarship, but it doesn’t quite cover the cost, which including housing is around 40k per year. I have excellent grades deans and presidents list every quarter of my 3 year length college career.
But what I really do not understand is how on a deferred student loan you are required to have a co-signer when they can be removed as your co signer after 18- 24 months.
This does not make much sense to me and if anyone has any kind of alternative ideas comments or solutions I would appreciate everything I can get my hands on.

Thank you

How can I persudae my parents not to move?

I’m only 12 and I have a great life and friends ; how come my sister gets to live her life until 18 in new jersey when she has her license and everything and my parents are wanting to move to VIRGINIA. I just wanna cry…i have a life here and i don’t wanna move!!!!!!!! At the time, my dad is in terrible physical condition and his business is in dept. I was where they were talking a few minutes ago and he was saying "We should just file bankruptcy and just sell this house. I’m under so much stress with this business. I have to get up every day at 5:30 am when I want to sleep. I just can’t handle this anymore I’m getting old and I wish I could just retire but we need money. We should just sell this house and move. Eventually we are doing that." I had to leave the room before i started crying. I can’t stand Virginia!!! No effence but I HATE their accent and everything about that place- the country and no stores…whats up with that? I’m a city girl and I want to stay that way. My dad
offered for me to go to the Virginia school and my New Jersey school, and I would do that but now it doesn’t seem like i can. Oh by the way I dont want to have the accent too. It’s makes me seem stupider. =[[[ help?
