So, I recently (a couple days ago) was served with court papers, I am being sued by a hospital for ,000. I have about k-100k in medical bills alone, so to avoid paying the ,000 I know I should just file bankruptcy. Today I had a consultation with an attorney, and I am SO confused still. It was a free 30 minute one, so maybe that’s why I felt really rushed and lost…but anyway. It’s going to cost about ,500 to file. I am a 25 year old BROKE college student who works part time at a retail store, this is a lot of money =/ ….I know it’d be easier and for sure would get the papers done RIGHT, if I had an attorney, but I don’t know if I can afford it. I know you can file yourself. Has anyone done this? My sister got a paralegal about 5 years ago, and filed herself. She said it was about 0, but she said the paralegal was helpful in helping her with the paperwork, BUT she did miss a few things. I feel like I’d be paying the lawyer to basically just go to the court and turn in the papers, and come with me to court. I still have to do all the dirty work of course…gathering my bills, filling out all the paperwork, etc…but I’m not sure if ,500 is worth having an attorney. Also, I am confused on this court paper I got. I know that they will eventually file a judgement against me (within 14 days) and start garnishing my checks, I understand bankruptcy can stop this. But is it only after your papers are completely filed and done? Or is it when you START the process? I am so lost! The attorney told me to try and get all this paper work gathered and figured out before 10 days so we can start it before the creditor starts coming after my money through the judgement. Does anyone have any advice? Thank you!

If you know you will run out of money in the next few months, should you see an attorney now or wait until you start actually missing payments?
@Huntsman, unfortunately it’s not just a matter of credit card debt, and other options, like a DMP, have been explored and disqualified.
@Wolf – I just checked my library and there’s no books on the subject "asset protection", altho I know they have books on debt etc. Any other suggestions?

I am ready to hire a law firm to file my chapter 11 bankruptcy called "PC Helpers" They seem legit and the price is reasonable. I found them online. Just seeing if anyone else out there has ever used them or heard of them. Just want to be safe. Not a good time to scammed for money I already do not have.

And is it a good idea? I owe money to a credit card, a bank, tons of medical bills, and student loans (although if I remember correctly, student loans aren’t forgiven through bankruptcy). I probably have 30K-40K in debt altogether—most of which being the medical bills. I’m 22, would bankruptcy be a good option? And how would I do it? How much would it cost? How long would it take to fix my credit thereafter?

I’m 23 years-old and my mother began taking out credit cards in my name when I turned 18. My credit is now horrible. I’ve contacted all three bureaus, the police, etc. The bureaus and companies I’ve contacted have told me that I’m still responsible. The police have done nothing. Now I’m apartment searching…except I’m getting denied everywhere because my credit is so horrible. I contacted a lawyer to clear this up, but it’s ,000 down. As a 23 year-old student, I don’t have that money. I’m wondering if I should/could just file for bankruptcy and be done with this. This sucks.

*I’ve written letters to all credit bureaus, they’ve done nothing and are holding me responsible
*The cops are fully aware, I even have a police report, and they literally have done nothing

I sold my car last year to someone for 00. He gave me 0 up front and we drew up a contract stating that the rest would be due no later than December 6th, 2010. When the time came, after many missed emails and calls he told me the car was in the shop and that he couldn’t pay it right then. After a great amount of emails and calls that went unanswered, I showed up at his house and asked his mom if he was there. He told me he had to file for bankruptcy and his lawyer told him not to say anything to anyone. He told me the car "had been taken" and told me to talk to his lawyer about it. After trying to leave a message at his office three times, the secretary got fed up and told me that there probably wasn’t anything that they could do for me and that I was named in the papers but they didn’t have the car and they have no idea who has the car. After this, I decided to do a bit of snooping online and have enough evidence to show that he still has the car and is even in fact trying to sell it online. He won’t respond to calls and keeps redirecting me to his lawyer. His lawyer answered the phone today surprisingly and told me that I was named as an unsecured creditor and that my pitfall was in not declaring a lien on the car when I drew up the contract. I asked him
‘If I were to go to his house and ask for the car back, would he have to give it to me?’
‘Bear in mind that he is my client and everything I say will be in his argument, but no, he has a right to the car because you gave him the title after signing the contract.’

I tried to contact a lawyer but he said he’d charge me 0 for a consultation.

I told the kid I’d need the money by the end of December so I knew I was going to be able to afford taking summer classes this year. Now I’m broke and can’t afford summer classes and might even
have to graduate late..this guy is ruining my life.

What should I do?

I have a lot of old debt from my younger years which I never took care of. I never could afford to either pay it off or to hire an attorney to file BK. Now I have 1 of the companies that just put in a wage garnishment for me and is taking about a week, money which I need to be paying my daycare provider for my girls.

My wife and I have talked about getting an attorney, but we know we cannot afford to pay the full amount up front and that it may take a few months or so before we have the entire amount available to pay the attorney. I also know that you can just pay a retainer fee in most cases and they will start working on collecting information and such. I guess, my question is, if I pay the retainer fee for a bankruptcy attorney in Wisconsin where I live, will this put a hold on the wage garnishment or does the wage garnishment continue until we actually file?

How can a government go bankrupt? What happens if a government goes bankrupt? When a private company goes bankrupt, it has to sell its assets, pay its liabilities, and distribute the money left to shareholders. Would a bankrupt government do the same? Some years ago, Russia defaulted on its debt. Did the bondholders take all the losses?

A non professional gave me the advice of filing bankruptcy for debt i have totaling 00. His argument was that with these debts that i have are obliterating my credit score anyway and that bankruptcy wouldnt be any worse. Is this true? What does filing bankruptcy do to your credit report and would it damage it more or less than leaving these debts sit as i do not have the money to pay them off at the moment. and now i cannot view my online account or receive statements in the mail. well i recently moved and I am 2 months behind but i have the money now and i want to pay but i am worried the money is going to just dissapear and they are going to take my car away! I’m being sued by my electric company. (Connecticut Light & Power) I have a very high bill , as a result of being on several payment arrangements over the years, because I am low income. My daughter has severe, life threatening asthma, and I am on the medical protection program to ensure her safety. I tried to work out an agreement with the lawyer’s office handling the lawsuit, and originally, they were going to have me on a payment arrangement of /week, or so I thought. Now, they’re claiming that they’d need my month’s usage plus a payment towards the rest of the bill to be able to settle the lawsuit, which I can’t afford. I don’t work because I have complications from having Lyme disease, and I have PTSD, and my husband is only on unemployment, with only 6/week, when we have a mortgage payment of 1157.33 a month, and were already behind some. I explained this already, and they don’t want to help me at all. I just honestly need some serious legal advice. Without the judgement and cruel comments, please. Should i file bankruptcy? What happens if I have to go to court? I honestly don’t have the money, and am so afraid and confused right now. Please help!!!

And please, no cruel comments about my life. People on this site love to knock others down all the time, and right now, I have more than enough to deal with, obviously.

Just give us a cold can of drink or milk or bottled water and peanut just before we go on the plane. While we are standing in line and giving tickets to airport workers, they can give us the bag of drink and snack.

We don’t need coffee or wine anyway.

One flight attendant… to tell us when to put on seat belt and all.

We can get up and get extra cup of water, available water dispenser.

Airport/Airline can save money by having one flight attendant per plane.

My family is not the best with money. But somehow I made it through with a decent understanding of the income/spending ratio.
Anyway, my mother is filing bankruptcy, but the lawyer wants 1200 to do it. Her wages already being garnished, she can’t save up the money so it has fallen to her 3 children to do it (because we care). I have a little in a savings account, and my sister has a bit, too. My brother agreed to help out also.
I figured this would be handled in less than a week, but that was 2 weeks ago. Now I get invited along ON VACATION by my sister in law. My brother’s family is going to South Carolina for a week.

Am I crazy, or should this whoole thing already be resolved before the 1st of the month when rent is due!?!?
I already declined the vacation, telling my sister in law that money is tight and I can’t take that much time off work or I won’t be able to to pay all my bills. (I work an hourly wage)
