Why is $13.7B not enough for GM and the UAW why not let them go bankrupt?
How much do tax payers have to give to bad GM managers and greedy UAW officials and workers? Average wage and benefit cost to a UAW worker is dollars an hour.

The United States Government has invested billions of tax payer dollars into GM, Chrysler and Ford. I personally been against the government being involved with private industries and financial institutes.
Did you know that when a individual or corporation files for bankruptcy their dept is erased and their assets are liquidated.
How much of that money will the government get back?
I know Chrysler closed all it’s plants during bankruptcy period, is GM going to? and when does it start? tomorrow. How long did Chrysler wait before they idled their plants after filing bankruptcy?
What is the key to Ford’s ability to keep afloat when Chrysler’s already filing bankruptcy and GM’s filing is inevitable? Is it the way the company is run? Is it the products? What’s making the difference?
does it become GM stock or what
Obama said that he wants car manufacturers to make much better fuel efficient cars. I read this article online in Yahoo News. Keep this in mind and continue reading.
I understand that GM and Chrysler have filed for bankruptcy. GM is going to come back in 30 days I heard. Is this right?
Back to Obama wanting car manufacturers to make better fuel efficient cars.
Why the hell is Obama letting GM keep the "hummer"?????????? The hummer is not a fuel efficient car.
I’m lost in my understanding of this.
While never having to look back at any of it’s obligations on hand at the moment; or get a bailout from the government in order to continue business. All of this is business as usual, and the entire charade is not be frowned upon. Yet, an individual who has to file for bankruptcy has so many hoops to jump; let alone doesn’t have the option to change their name, move to another state, and start over with a new Identity…even when it comes to paying state taxes?
Should Corporations have the same hardcore loops to jump through as the average American taxpayer?
Sohale-
I guess my real point is the fact that companies have closed down, filed bankruptcy, and started a new without having to pay state taxes; not to mention leaving people empty handed (customers) while tax payers foot the bill…A good example would be GM. Even if they go under, the American taxpayer will be stuck with billions they will not be able to pay in taxes. However, in order to stay ‘viable’, the American taxpayer is again stuck for billions, while at the same time individuals still profit…
Since GM is filing for bankruptcy, I’ve been reading that it’s going to be nationalized only for the "short term." So, I figure they should hopefully make some decent money once the government steps away. What are your opinions?
US industry GM, Ford, Chrysler, Steel. etc were critical to America surviving and winning WW ll, Korea, etc.
These factories could be bought by Muslims with our money, then the doors shut, workers laid off, the plants dismantled and junked or shipped out of the country. With no defense left for the country, how will we feed all the poor? And stop the barbarians from sacking the country?
I keep reading about people and companies filing for bankruptcy these days. Particularly GM and Chrysler. What exactly happens when someone files for bankruptcy? People say that it’s something you want to avoid if at all possible, but I’ve also heard Bush say that it’s a good thing for the auto companies to do in order to reorganize their companies. Now I’m no Bush fan but there’s got to be SOME substance to what he said (maybe?) as his economic advisers are saying this is a good idea. Why does Bush say this is a good idea while many other leaders say it’s a bad idea?
I’ve also read comments from "regular" people who say that the Big Three should be left to go bankrupt and clean up their own mess. But that this would cause tons of people to lose their jobs.
I’ve looked up the dictionary definition of bankruptcy as well as the wiki page and I’m still confused. I need someone to give me a very simple explanation about what bankruptcy is and what is going on right now in the US. Please help me understand this!
How would you solve our foreign diplomacy problems? Bomb all of our enemies? Do we start nuking Korea, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Pakistan, Palestine China. Would that solve it? Then what do we do with all those dying people?
How would you solve our financial problems? Let every company now fail, and all the banks fail? GM fail, all housing in foreclosure, and all people on the streets?
How would you solve our health care problems? (One in four bankruptcies is now caused by inability to pay medical costs). Would you just turn away anyone and everyone who is dying if they cannot pay? If they are in a car crash, do we let them die in the wreckage if they cannot show a medical insurance card?
I find lots of you on here are big to criticize, but I find no real alternative solutions.
Take one of these and discuss it.
In the fall of last year, I thought the economy might be turning around by now. Now Chrysler is going into bankruptcy and GM is following. This means all the dealerships will suffer and the suppliers etc. etc. We have tent cities going up and more people are losing their homes.
Where will all the "blue collar" workers find other employment opportunities? I know that there is a push for alternative energy and infrastructure rebuilding, but I can’t see that this will be enough.
If we can turn it around, what do you think the economy will be like in 10 years. Where will the manufacturing jobs be?
And not just in 10 years, when do you think the economy will turn around?
Most of Congress has decided that bailing them out is not worthwhile because it won’t work anyway and they’ll just need more money in a matter of months. I agree with this. Some in Congress point out that a car company cannot survive in bankruptcy because need for parts and service are on-going and who the heck is going to buy a car from a bankrupt company (unless the car is sold well undervalue)? I think that’s also correct. So here’s what I think is the only real solution: All 3 should merge and form one company which, of course, will mean lay-offs, but not nearly as bad as the alternative. This single company would still be competing against foreign auto makers, so there are no worries about a monopoly.
Does anyone else agree with me? If not, what do you see as the alternative? Remember — letting these companies go out of business means 2 – 3 million workers losing their jobs.
Please offer the alternative to what I’m suggesting and why yours is a good idea.
Dewey, I agree, but in the meantime these 3 auto makers are on the verge of going out of business. The CEOs of GM and Ford told Congress their companies would be out of business within a year unless they received a bail-out — which they didn’t receive. Don’t even get me started about their corporate jets — what a disgrace!
First and foremost, if you are here to insult me you might as well save it. You could not possibly think any less of me than I do of myself at the moment.
In case you would like a little background history, I am 26 years old and living back at home. I am not currently working and was terminated from my previous two jobs. One was on a retaliatory basis and one was pretty much what I would call theft by omission. Let me explain, you see I had gone into the diner where I was working, at the time, on my night off. Of course, I had quite a bit to drink that night but not enough to excuse my actions (seeing on the ticket that my meal wasn’t on there and leaving without doing anything to rectify the situation.) A "friend" slash co-worker went with me, along with a few other friends. The co-worker had asked the cook to make some food without a ticket and slipped him some money to do so, evidently. When he told me of his plan I told him it was stupid and I would prefer to just pay for my food. Well, he kept insisting on "taking care of it," so I went to our waitress and asked her to make sure my food was on the ticket; all she did was smirk and chuckle. Long story short, my food wasn’t one of the meals on the ticket and I was fired for that purpose. Now, I have never been a thief and don’t want my reputation completely down the shooter. I really want to go in to speak with the GM, but I have anxiety and have yet to bring myself to go in and pay for my food, though they had no qualms whatsoever about making me work OFF the clock for them on several occasions. I’m not trying to justify anything, but merely trying to figure out what the best approach would be? Do I get the courage to go in and speak with the GM? Do I write it off since I’m already regarded as a thief? What should I do? (By the way, there is a LOT more to this story, but I am not here to vent.)
Before that I job-hopped a lot. Nothing was ever challenging enough. I was always ambitious but seemed to have lost all motivation (due to depression mostly,) and direction in life.
I’ve been in and out of college. Dropping out several times due to a debilitating anxiety disorder and relationship problems.
I’ve accumulated some debt in the process and feel so overwhelmed. Once in a while I will tell myself, " I should just file bankruptcy!" Then I begin to rationalize and know that it’s not an option for me. I WANT to get back on track and pay my debt off, respectively.
Right now my sole focus is trying to find a new job, but I AM being sort of picky because I want to find something that will last while I get my life back together with paying my debt off; moving back into a place of my own; and returning to and finishing college.
Lately though, all I can think about is suicide. It’s just a lingering thought mostly. Is there something I can do to keep these thoughts from entering my mind? I keep telling myself if I keep my faith in God things will be all right.
If you need further details let me know. Your advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
Do they continue as GM dealerships, sell their inventory or convert to Honda/Toyota if there is a buyout?
I know we’ve had Ford GM and Chrysler for a long time, but what should happen if our car companies go out of Business, and how are we going to manufacture or transportation?
If GM go bankrupt what will happen to my stocks and my money that I invested in them?
If my stocks are worth nothing and another company buys GM, will my stock go up?
I am thinking about buying stock with GM. If they go bankrupt what will happen to my stock and my money that I invested in them?
If they do go bankrupt, won’t that leave the small suppliers holding the bag for money owed to them by Ford, Chrysler, and GM? How would that impact the economy?
My dad works for GM and since the news that GM may declare bankruptcy, both of my parents have been worried. What are the chances that GM will go bankrupt?
