Will retaining a bankruptcy attorney stop my wage garnishment?

I have a lot of old debt from my younger years which I never took care of. I never could afford to either pay it off or to hire an attorney to file BK. Now I have 1 of the companies that just put in a wage garnishment for me and is taking about a week, money which I need to be paying my daycare provider for my girls.

My wife and I have talked about getting an attorney, but we know we cannot afford to pay the full amount up front and that it may take a few months or so before we have the entire amount available to pay the attorney. I also know that you can just pay a retainer fee in most cases and they will start working on collecting information and such. I guess, my question is, if I pay the retainer fee for a bankruptcy attorney in Wisconsin where I live, will this put a hold on the wage garnishment or does the wage garnishment continue until we actually file?

Wives, how much work travel do you find acceptable for your husband?

Recently my job has required me to travel much more than ever before. I am overseas about 50% of the time in stretches of four weeks or so. My wife has a full time job in sales and works from home. She works very hard and not just during normal business hours. Sometimes she’s up late at night doing quotes and stuff.

My job is much more stable than hers. I’ve never had to change jobs or been laid off. She’s had quite a bit of change. Three companies in the last two years, once laid off and one went bankrupt. So, what this means is my job provides a lot of stability for us.

We have two daughters in middle school, 7th and 8th grade. They are a lot easier to care for now being older. But, they still have to get help in homework and be driven to music lessons and such.

My boss can’t or won’t tell me how much longer this is going to go on. I think for a year or so. I miss them a lot when I’m gone and I think it can be hard on them having to do without me. Helping with driving the kids around, fixing things, etc.

So, my question is this. How much is this hurting us? Should I try to find another job, put my foot down with the boss and demand an answer? She says that she supports whatever I need to do for my job. She doesn’t say so, but, I know she doesn’t like it. And the girls hate it. I’m not that fond of it either, but, it’s not that bad for me other than missing their company, which I alleviate by calling them a lot.
Thanks Seth. I find that I don’t have as much time as I used to.

Bad time to reunite? bankruptcy and death?

I found my first mom a few years ago, and I’m finally ready to mail the letter but I am curious if I should send it for the following reasons.

1. She gave up 2 more girls after me
2. One of the 2 children she kept died in an accident, I’m the same age as that kid when they died.
3. The other child is severely disabled.
4. She married the father of the youngest. They had to file bankruptcy for both home and business.
5. They filed bankruptcy on my birthday.

I am a little concerned that my reappearance will be more harmful than helpful to her family right now.
I don’t think she could be too concerned by my adoption, as she did it two more times within the next 5 years.

Is there any place online or somewhere that will help me get Christmas for my girls?

Hi, my good credit was ruined by a divorce and a loss of a job in feb2009. I was making ,000 a year so the judge thought he would give me ALL the marital debt, then i lost my job about a month later. I was at that job for 5 years. I bought my own house and expedition with nothing down, if that tells you a little about how my credit was. Then i lost my job, and had to file bankruptcy just so i would not loose my house, and then of course my ex fought me on the bankrupty and it got dismissed, but of course my credit has already been ruined. I make good money again, but im just trying to play catch up, and i am married again to a wonderful man, and the only thing we fight about is money that is it! For my entire life i was the one to ALWAYS help others and now, at my time of need there is no one. So does anyone know of any place online or whatever that will finance Christmas gifts even when you have pathetic credit if you can indeed prove your income? I could care less if i get anything, but my girls are still young, and i want to do something for my husband so bad, for what all he went through just because he loved me so much. Thanks for reading!
