How do I file for bankruptcy by myself or with a cheap lawyer?? I have about 50k in debt. Right now I am not working and I can not afford to pay off my debt. The only income I have right now is from the state and that is food stamps. If anyone can point me in the right direction that would be great!

I had a civil complaint filed against me and my partner a while back. I retained a lawyer for ,000 but when the bill arrived from the following month for another ,000 I was pretty much in over my head. Economy was going down, bills rising, customers cutting spending, etc.
So I told the law firm I was broke and probably going to file bankruptcy. He said that would "stay" the suit and he quickly moved to be dismissed with the court as my attorney… since I could no longer pay.
I got a letter that said I had to respond in 30 days to proceed pro se, but I misread it and thought it said they would consider me pro se if I didn’t hire a lawyer in 30 days. So I basically defaulted on the suit. That was last October.
Now it looks like I may not need to file bankruptcy. We cut expenses, got food stamps, medicaid and I am working my way back up slowly but surely.
This lawsuit is meritless. It was a client who wanted to return k of computer equipment 3 months after purchase because he want out of business. He is a former attorney and is just trying to cause us pain. I can’t afford to fight it. I cant afford even a consultant.
I am not sure what I should do as my former partner has a lawyer and they want me to give depositions, etc to help him.
What should I do???

I am already pissed at myself and feel like a complete failure for contemplating this, so save me the guff… Anyways, I lived off of my credit cards for a few years when I lost a job and had some medical issues. Prior to that, I spent like a young 20-something who wants unnecessary BS.
I have 4 cards with a combined balance of ,000. 2 credit cards have been inactive for months, and the other 2 have clothing/food purchases from 3 months ago. I have been trying to stay afloat and have paid on time for the last 10 years, trying to pay them off. My creditors have not treated me well for my loyalty and about 1 1/2 ago ( I missed my payment date by a few days), raised my minimum payment to amounts I can not keep up with. I have been paying them with my child’s child support money since I have been unable to find work. I have lost so much in my life and I was really proud of my credit. But I feel like I am in a sinking ship trying to keep up and recently seeing how much more I have to pay since I can only afford the minimums on all 4 cards really made me feel hopeless.
By all means, I am a loser: I can’t find a job, I qualify for food stamps, I am trying to finish college and can barely afford to buy textbooks, I am trying to raise a child alone, I am living off the kindness of others with no assets and about in my checking account. I am terrified of stopping paying off my cards, but I literally think this is the only way. I hesitated all these years because I wanted to be responsible, and I heard bankruptcy ruins lives. What should I do? Where do I start? Thanks for your time
Also…Looked for Bankruptcy attorneys online…How much will I have to pay one (avg)? I live in So-Cal.

Help I hear so many diffrent stories and read so many diffrent answers who is right? I do not owe alot of money maybe 15,000 but I am tired of having bad credit! I just want a new start. I know because I have seen it people that file bankruptcy get to start over and enjoy having good credit again I just want mine clean! When I say I have seen it it’s because my god mother went through this and she has more credit cards, a new house better than the one she had before! I am only 25 I will turn 26 this year I only have one child and I want my own house before I am thirty so should I try to file and start with a new slate? Yes I know I owe the debt so before I get insults just give me advise I learned my lesson I want a new start and better life for my son
I am considered a low income, I have help from the state, food stamps and medicade. Will BK affect my son’s medicade? Will the state take it away

A lady dropped off some papers in person today, from a law firm, stating he needs to appear in court Oct 17th. The total came to a little over 1600$, he has 2 other cards with about this much on each (but neither has filed a complaint). Problem is, we are barely making it as it is, we are even on food stamps right now. We have 3 children, and I don’t work right now, I plan to go back to school. Also, he was only 17 when he got the card, he lied on the application, will that have an effect? Should he file for bankruptcy? Can they attach his wages?

i do not, nor have i ever, used credit cards. i do not use a bank. my husband has been out of work since november. he can not find anything that would support us and our two small children. we have hospital bills, outstanding power bills, cable bills, we have almost 16,000 worth of his student loans for college that he didn’t ge to finish b/c he ran out of money and had to drop out. i got 2 tickets last month for not having insurance or a tag (it was at a mandatory checkpoint). i cant count all of our bills. he had a great job lined up to start on monday and we got a letter in the mail yesterday saying that his job offer has been withdrawn b/c of a bad driving record (2 tickets in the last 4 years). our tax refund, which would have been almost 6000 was taken from us by the dept. of education for his student loan. it would have gotten us back on our feet until he got a job. what do we do? i’m so depressed. we need help. we have food stamps and F.A. 5 per month – any advice would help
we have been relying on my family’s help for rent and power payments…but their help and support is running out…i honestly dont know what to do.

My Car was just repossessed and they are going to sue me. I am very behind on credit cards that I can not pay. I lost my job several months ago and have filed for disability. I have no income, no savings..nothing. All I am getting is food stamps (which I am very grateful for) but no other assistance. I am not getting unemployment, as I was terminated and was not eligible. I keep getting advice to file bankruptcy..but I have no assets, no money to hire an attorney..so I don’t know how I would file chapter 7 or 13 when I have no money or assets..don’t they need that?. How does someone file bankruptcy with no money? I called Legal Aid (Cincinnati) and they were unable to help me or suggest anyone who can help me pro bono. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am not sure what to do. I already know my credit will be trashed, so no need to tell me that. Thank you for listening.

If the family is on welfare (government-assisted apartments & food stamps) but has much unpaid medical bills? Husband has only VA insurance but apparently they won’t pay much of the bill because he reported it past 90 days (or something close to that). Not sure what bankruptcy entails but I know it means "start from scratch" but we also don’t have anything to give….so can a person on welfare file?
