When filing chapter 7 bankruptcy who decides what is exempt, as far as house hold items/pets etc?

Considering filing bankruptcy. Attorney gave me a paper to fill out stating evey thing we own. Right down to pets, and clothes. I did some research and found our state allows up to ,500 in house items to be exempt along with animals. I do not understand how they can even get by with asking you to list your pets as part of what you own, or your personal clothes. I may see such if you were raising animals for resell, or if you had real expensive clothing, or a movie star who some one else may want to say they own a piece of such and such clothing etc. But if this were the case those people would not be considering bankruptcy in the first place. As for the house items who makes the decisions as to what is exempt and what is not. I know my house items will not exceed the allotment in our state, but still I am curious about such.

When is it appropriate to file bankruptcy?

My husband is 21, unfortunately he has made some horrible decisions in his life regarding money. He is now considered ‘high risk’ by EVERY loan company you can think of, including the NO CREDIT BAD CREDIT NO PROBLEM people, lol. Now his (not mine, my name is not on it, and please remember, I just recently became his wife!) car is up for repossession. He leaves for basic in January, and that will solve many of our money problems. However, we NEED this car, myself and my daughter, while he is in basic and up until that time. How long will it take them to come get it? And the real question I am asking is–with his credit being this horrible, and owing all this money that’s so terribly behind, should he just file bankruptcy?? I know it will freeze the repo and we can at least keep the car. He is only 21, I know that is young, but his credit report is four pages long–of crap he still owes. Would it be better to start over even with a bankruptcy? (my credit is good.)
That is–keep the car for an undetermined amount of time. His mother (imagine that, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree) filed bankruptcy earlier this year and drove her truck for free for over six months.

What is involved when filing for bankruptcy?

I made some bad credit card decisions when I was younger and I’ve been paying for it for quite some time now. I’m going to college full time, about to graduate, and working 20-30 hours/week. The money I earn is barley enough to cover my monthly payments. The rate I’m going with interest and all, it will take me a while to pay this off. What is the best way to go about filing bankruptcy and how much does it cost? Will all my debt be wiped out completely?
