September 14th, 2011 at 9:08 amThe price depends on several variables. The best attorneys charge more than those who are just starting out. How complicated is your bankruptcy? How much paperwork needs to be filed? Those also play a part in determining the cost.
Chapter 7 is generally cheaper than a chapter 13 because it is filed and then the debts are discharged and it’s over. A chapter 13 involves a repayment plan that usually lasts 5 years. During that time, the attorney still has to present any questions or problems you have to the court trustee so it involves more paperwork and time making sure payments are handled property & the money goes where it’s supposed to go for the next 5 years.
Neither are cheap, and I’d say in today’s economy the cost for a chapter 7 probably starts around 3 thousand and goes up. The first consultation with an attorney is free, so you can check with a few and shop around to find the best price.

Take advantage of this to meet with one and get advice based on all of the details of your particular situation.
