How do I fix my credit?

My credit is horrible although I never have had credit cards or repos. I just never paid bill when I was younger. I figured it was no big deal. Like I couldn’t even tell you who I all owe. My family has been using my info since I was a kid. My score is really low. Now I am grown, married with children of my own, of course I pay my bills now. But how do I go about fixing the past if I don’t even know who I all owe. I would like to buy a house someday. Should I file bankruptcy???

Don’t file bankruptcy if you can help it. That will follow you around for 7yrs before it comes off your credit report and you would have to wait 2yrs before you could buy a house. It would help you a lot to see your credit report that way you know all your bills you owe. Also, if you have collections pay them off as soon as possible. If you don’t have enough money to pay your bills off at once (who really does anyway) just make sure you start paying them on time. It wouldn’t hurt if you paid more than the minimum payment. Other than that it would be a matter of time before your credit goes up. Just don’t go around shopping for credit cards, auto loans or mortgages because each one when they check your credit will effect your credit score.

Have you contacted the companies that you owe money to? Perhaps instead of considering bankruptcy, repay the money you owe.

i dont know of any quick fix. just pay ALL of your bills on time and IN FULL. from now on. over time your credit score will improve. also you can try to contact the ppl who u owe money too. try to settle debt. other than that. dont miss payments. dont hold an unpaid balance on your credit cards. and give it some time.

First thing you need to do is obtain a copy of your credit report. Look it over carefully for any inaccuracies. If there are, dispute them with the credit bureaus. You mentioned that your family used your credit info. This is fraud, but if you reported to creditor as such, they would expect you to file a police report. After a certain number of years, outstanding debts fall off your credit report, except for judgments which can be renewed. Fix the most recent collections first. Pay off the ones with the highest interest rate. Then, you can clean up your credit with secured credit cards, to show that you have the ability to pay your debts on time. Start at the beginning though. It took years to make a credit mess and it cannot be fixed overnite, but it can be fixed. Good luck.
