So, I recently (a couple days ago) was served with court papers, I am being sued by a hospital for ,000. I have about k-100k in medical bills alone, so to avoid paying the ,000 I know I should just file bankruptcy. Today I had a consultation with an attorney, and I am SO confused still. It was a free 30 minute one, so maybe that’s why I felt really rushed and lost…but anyway. It’s going to cost about ,500 to file. I am a 25 year old BROKE college student who works part time at a retail store, this is a lot of money =/ ….I know it’d be easier and for sure would get the papers done RIGHT, if I had an attorney, but I don’t know if I can afford it. I know you can file yourself. Has anyone done this? My sister got a paralegal about 5 years ago, and filed herself. She said it was about 0, but she said the paralegal was helpful in helping her with the paperwork, BUT she did miss a few things. I feel like I’d be paying the lawyer to basically just go to the court and turn in the papers, and come with me to court. I still have to do all the dirty work of course…gathering my bills, filling out all the paperwork, etc…but I’m not sure if ,500 is worth having an attorney. Also, I am confused on this court paper I got. I know that they will eventually file a judgement against me (within 14 days) and start garnishing my checks, I understand bankruptcy can stop this. But is it only after your papers are completely filed and done? Or is it when you START the process? I am so lost! The attorney told me to try and get all this paper work gathered and figured out before 10 days so we can start it before the creditor starts coming after my money through the judgement. Does anyone have any advice? Thank you!

I don’t know if i should file or not, not that I have great credit, but I’m tired of some things that’s bad popping up, and I want more options for them not to pop up, I thought of getting my credit cleaned, but don’t know if there is a cheaper way to hide some bad stuff I don’t intend nor have to repair them the right way.

Here’s my situation. I was on the top of the world before I even turned 21. I worked so hard to accomplish my financial goals of basically owning my own house and own vehicle before my 21st birthday. Some where down the road I got lost… The great job I had to get the house, I had to eventually step back from to take a slightly lower paying job that offered insurance. To make a very long, struggle-filled story short. I lost everything. And when I say everything, I mean everything. My then fiance` and I split, needing to find our selves again. My new job wasn’t what I thought it was going to be. I inevitabley lost my house, my car, and had to stop making payments on all my credits cards because I quit my job to move across country (with my now husband) who is an Active Duty Marine (now deployed ). I know this is all over the charts, but since my husband is now gone, this is giving me a lot of time to fix/figure out our financial situation. Since my credit score is basically at the lowest point possible now, which bankruptcy should I file for? How does Chapter 7, 11, 13 etc work? My husband does make a decent amount of money, specially being deployed now. But really only enough to pay the bills and pay down his credit. Any and all information on this would be great.

Thanks KMcG. Yes – I am aware of th 7-10 year rule with bankruptcy. We’re even considering staying in the military (boo) to bandage all our debt.

Lawyers, as far I know, cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars… So… if I want to try to file bankruptcy with my wife how are we supposed to hire and/or afford a lawyer to help us?

I am ready to hire a law firm to file my chapter 11 bankruptcy called "PC Helpers" They seem legit and the price is reasonable. I found them online. Just seeing if anyone else out there has ever used them or heard of them. Just want to be safe. Not a good time to scammed for money I already do not have.

I have bad hypochondria. I developed this 3 years ago and it’s pretty bad. I’m constantly fearing that I will catch some disease and die or that I will move my body or eat wrong and choke to death or break an internal organ. Most of my fear is of having a heart related problem. I don’t go out anymore and I stay inside so that nothing bad happens, like getting in a car accident. If someone mentions an accident or death of a loved one it makes me both sad and very scared and I have a panic attack. I spend hours looking up symptoms online and I now have to file bankruptcy because of medical bills for doctors visits for minor illnesses when I didn’t have any health insurance. I want to go teach english abroad for a year but I don’t know how I can when I can’t even barely leave the house outside of work. I’m afraid I’ll get ill and die in a foreign country.

I asked the question earlier about two repos being consolidated that total to about ,000. How much does it cost to file for bankruptcy? fees and all?

And is it a good idea? I owe money to a credit card, a bank, tons of medical bills, and student loans (although if I remember correctly, student loans aren’t forgiven through bankruptcy). I probably have 30K-40K in debt altogether—most of which being the medical bills. I’m 22, would bankruptcy be a good option? And how would I do it? How much would it cost? How long would it take to fix my credit thereafter?

Okay my question is if i file for bankruptcy will i stop getting collection notices and calls from a collection agency.

See my case is i have a kidney transplant and when i moved to Seattle WA 3 years ago. The insurance here didn’t want to cover me for my medication(because they were to expensive) and doctor visits. So i got a debt from the hospital of almost 00 dollars. But right now i haven’t work in almost a month and the agent told me that if i don’t give a payment their going to take me to court.

I received a letter in the mail from an attorney. My lender wants to start the foreclosure proceedings. At the moment, I am 11 months behind on my mortgage. I want to dump the house as I owe 20% more than it is worth. What happens if I file for bankruptcy right away? Does that cover the foreclosure too?? Or would the bank come after me after it sells my condo for the difference? I have a 10,000 in credit card debt and 9000 auto loan. I have been unemployed for quite sometime without having luck finding a job. Even my unemployment has ran out at the moment. I don’t have any assets unless furniture counts? I’m 23 years-old and my mother began taking out credit cards in my name when I turned 18. My credit is now horrible. I’ve contacted all three bureaus, the police, etc. The bureaus and companies I’ve contacted have told me that I’m still responsible. The police have done nothing. Now I’m apartment searching…except I’m getting denied everywhere because my credit is so horrible. I contacted a lawyer to clear this up, but it’s ,000 down. As a 23 year-old student, I don’t have that money. I’m wondering if I should/could just file for bankruptcy and be done with this. This sucks.

*I’m not trying to protect her
*I’ve written letters to all credit bureaus, they’ve done nothing and are holding me responsible
*The cops are fully aware, I even have a police report, and they literally have done nothing
